According to travel agencies, this may be another record setting year for both foreign and domestic travel. If you’ve never taken a trip outside the country or are taking a big trip at home with the family this here, we’ve got some great tips that will help you to organize a fun adventure.
Start with planning to use a couple lightweight suitcases, one large and one smaller one are recommended. You’ll want to use the smaller suitcase for everything you will need after a day of being on the go such as your nightgown, robe, folding slippers, toothbrush and toothpaste, and cosmetics. Remember, after you’ve been visiting sites all day, you’ll be too tired at night to spend time rummaging through a big bag for your essentials. The rest of the clothes you’re taking along should go in the bigger suitcase.
The best way to deal with packing well is creating an economy of space. You should pack smaller sizes of all of your favorite cosmetic preparations such as cold creams, toothpaste, shampoo and bath powders. Make sure you take along the toothpaste that has breath fresheners and teeth brighteners all in one.
You should also bring a travel sized alarm clock. There’s no guarantee that the concierge will remember your wake-up call to get you to your early morning bus on time. When you’re out and around for the day be sure to carry enough cash to cover expenses for a couple days, but no more than that. Another option to protect that spending money would be traveler’s checks. These checks can be changed for cash as you go. Carrying a credit card would also be a good idea. Bring one card which is recognized internationally, and don’t bother with any others.
Some simple safety procedures will make you a less obvious target. You shouldn’t carry your handbag using one strap. It is safer to carry your handbag by crossing the strap over your body, or tucking it under your arm. Also, carry your wallet in a front pocket if possible.
It’s also advisable to put elastic bands around your wallet. The rubber bands will make the wallet less likely to slip out of your pocket or be removed without your knowing it. It is unwise to bring any items that are extremely valuable either in terms of cash or sentimental value with you while you travel. Put some necessities like an outfit change into the bag you carry with you.
You may also wish to purchase a small clothesline designed for traveling, inflatable hangers, and miniature clothespins as well. When you rinse out your clothing each night, these can prove to be very useful.
Have some self addressed mailing labels on hand. You can use these to easily mail purchases back to yourself. Simply ask the sales associate to put the label on your package before it’s shipped. They also come in handy if you plan to send anyone post cards while you are traveling.
Make sure to save all of your receipts from sales and shipping in an envelope or coupon carrier for easy reference. When going through customs, the envelope will have any documentation they request. A must have on any trip is a collection of plastic zip bags in various sizes to carry lotions or makeup, even shoes or laundry.
Remember that you probably won’t be able to find your favorite brands overseas so if you have a particular sunblock or skin lotion that you like, you will have to bring it with you. Empty shampoo, lotion and other liquid and semi-liquid items into plastic containers so they won’t break in transit.
Finally, you need to pick and pack smart clothes for your trip – be sure to only bring items that won’t wrinkle during travel. You don’t need to arrive at your destination with a literal laundry list of chores to do! Don’t try to pack too much into one trip. Sure, you’ll want to see and do all you can, especially if you are visiting a new place, but you need to also plan time to relax and enjoy the hotel and the local scenery.
