Short Term Health Insurance

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

It has become necessary for people to have health insurance because of the ever rising costs of health care. Health Insurance plans can be broadly categorized into permanent or temporary plans. The permanent health insurance plans provide for a person’s medical expenses for their entire life. On the other hand, temporary plans cover the medical expenses of people for a short time period.

The temporary health plans may even be called short term health insurance plans. These plans provide for the medical expenses of people who buy them for a period which can range from one month to six months. Once the period for which these plans have been purchased gets over, the policy can be renewed for a period of up to 36 months.

Generally all short term health insurance plans pay for all types of medical expenses barring the bills for pre existing medical conditions. All short term health plans have their own exclusions and limitations making it important for people buying these plans to read the policy documents carefully to know what expenses are covered by the plan.

Short term health insurance plans benefit those people the most who are changing jobs or those who have part time jobs. These plans are also advantageous for people who have taken an early retirement or for military personnel and even college students. Those people who do not have any permanent insurance plan can also take the benefits of these plans.

Except for emergency conditions, all short term medical plans require that people obtain certification from a hospital or doctor before going in for a treatment so that the expenses can be reimbursed.

Short term health insurance plans are less expensive as compared to other types of insurance plans. Policy holders have to pay a nominal amount of premium. The premium is determined by several factors and must be considered so that the best plan can be purchased.

One of the main advantages of a short term health insurance plan is that the process of application is very simple and a person applying for such a plan gets the policy within a few days. The main reason is that these plans do not cover comprehensive health insurance but only provide for against unforeseen events.

One of the main disadvantages of these types of plans is that they cannot be renewed after a specific time period. Any types of vision and dental related treatments are also not covered by these plans. Are you looking for a Supplement To Medicare?
