The Medicare Process

If your birthdate falls on the first of the month, your Medicare coverage will start on the first day of the prior month. Upon turning the age of 65, some people automatically receive Medicare A and B Coverage. Medicare A & B coverage starts the first day of the month that you turn 65.
If you are 65 and disabled, you automatically get Part A and Part B after you get disability benefits from the social security office or RRB. Once the process starts, you will receive a red,white, and blue card from Medicare. This card usually comes 3 months prior to your 65th birthdate or the 25th month of your disability start date.

If you do not receive Social Security or RRB benefits because of employment, you can apply for your Part A and Part B coverage. If you are not eligible for this coverage at a premium free, you can buy it.

The initial enrollment period is a 7 month period. This starts 3 months prior to you turning 65 and goes during your birthdate month and then 3 months following your 65th birthdate. Sign up early to avoid any delay in getting coverage for your part B coverage.

If you sign up for your Part A and B late, you can do so between January 1 and March 31 each year. Your coverage will start that July. This is a self paid premium that you are responsible for.

If you did not sign up for Part A or Part B when you first became eligible because of employment group plans, you can sign up for Part A and Part B once the employment ends or the group plan is no longer available to you. You have 8 months depending on what happens first to get your Part A and or Part B without paying a late enrollment fee.
