Insurance Fraud Increases As The Recession Hits Hard

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

After the bubble burst in the Irish economy and after a succession of harsh budgets people have been forced into adjusting their sometimes lavish lifestyles. We have all had to cut back a little. Actually, there are still a number of people who refuse to quit their lavish way of life and will turn to crime to supplement their living. Insurance fraud is an area they tend to get caught up in. People see the rich bankers being let off the hook with golden parachute deals after messing up the country and they want their slice of the cake.

When you think of fraud you would think that it is done to combat poverty. People who earn little are trying to con money to make a living. The reality is often quite the opposite. Pride can be just as bad a cause of fraud. People cannot stand the drop in their standard of living and they want to maintain their reputations among the neighbours. They have lived lifestyles that they cannot now afford. Instead of accepting their new circumstances they turn to fraud to supplement their old lavish lifestyles.

The Irish Insurance Federation is a representative body for insurance companies. They have identified the growing trend of insurance fraud and are battling hard to stop it. Michael Horan from the IIF states “there is definitely an increase in claims in the recession”. Internal statistics show that the number of tip-offs to insurance fraud claims via a confidential phone line have increased by over 50% in the year 2009 when compared to 2008. These figures clearly highlight that there is something wrong. Numbers do not surge like this without a reason. The reason in this case is the recession. If the recession deepens then the insurance fraud levels are also likely to increase.

The Irish Insurance Federation put a strong focus on detecting and preventing fraud over 10 years ago. Part of this plan of action involved the creation of a database of high risk claimants. Their details were stored on a database which could be checked by insurance companies. Nick Starling of the ABI says ‘Whether claiming against a third party for bogus personal injury or on their own insurance, fraudsters are more likely than ever to get caught, leading to more expensive and harder-to-obtain insurance and credit and the possibility of a criminal record’.

Over the last year we have seen the introduction of savage cuts in the budget. This is highly likely to cause monetary problems for many families. Insurance fraud will be seen as one way out of a debt spiral. With the new insurance fraud detection measures that are in place it has hoped that this will deter these fraudsters in the future.

The Benefits Of Getting Older…in Terms Of Your Car Insurance

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

You are another year older and another grey hair on the head. It is not all bad news though as some things get better with age. Take for example your car insurance. If you are over 22 and have a full license then you are probably much better off now with AXA insurance. Chances are that you now have a ‘Drivers of Other Cars’ policy extension included.

AXA covers most of our customers (aged over 22 years with a full licence or 25 years old with a full or provisional licence) while driving other people’s cars. This means you can drive someone else’s car and automatically have Third Party cover on it (without being a named driver on the owner’s car insurance), as long as you have been given permission to drive the car.

Here is an example of just how valuable the ‘Driving of Other Cars’ extension could be to you: You are heading away for the weekend with two friends. One of them offers to drive the three of you down the country. Unfortunately over the weekend this friend breaks his arm and isn’t able to drive you all back. But all is not lost – if you have the ‘Driving of Other Cars’ extension on your AXA car insurance policy you could help save the day, hop in your friend’s car and drive you all home – safe in the knowledge that you have Third Party cover.

This cover only applies if you don’t own the car or haven’t hired it under a hire-purchase agreement. The easiest way to check if you have this cover is to have a look at your certificate of insurance – the covers you have are shown in Section 5(b).

Whilst the cover offered to you by the “Driving of Other Cars” policy extension is a coveted thing to possess, it does not cover every vehicle. This extension applies to private passenger vehicles only. This excludes vehicles such as vans, car-vans, jeep type vehicles with no backseats, and vans that are adapted to carrying passengers. So be aware of this in the future.

Did you know that if you are an AXA customer with 3 years fully comprehensive car insurance then you will get your Customers that have been with AXA for 3 or more years with comprehensive insurance will be upgraded. The 3rd party “Driving of Other Cars” extension will now be transformed into comprehensive “Driving of Other Cars” cover for free. So if you are driving your friend’s car home after your holidays you will now be covered if you happen to damage his car.

Take advantage of your increasing grey hairs with AXA car insurance Ireland. Purchase cheap car insurance today.
