Senior Insurance: Defray The High Cost Of Health Care
Senior Insurance, otherwise known as Medigap or Medicare Supplemental insurance is something that you need seriously consider. With the high cost of health care you do not want to be without this valuable coverage. While Medicare is a great program and has good coverage, some of the costs that are not covered can be financially devastating. With Senior Insurance coverage you will be able to help defray your health care costs and have peace of mind should the time come and you need major medical attention.
Senior Insurance or Medigap insurance is available to anyone that has Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B. You are eligible for open enrollment on the first day of the month that you turn 65 years old. The open enrollment period lasts for 6 months. Some states have additional open enrollment periods, check with an insurance agent in your state to find out what the guidelines are. The great thing about the open enrollment period is that insurance companies cannot use medical underwriting. This means that your insurance company has to make available to you the Medigap policy that they sell, they cannot make you wait for your coverage to begin and regardless of your health issues they cannot charge you more for your policy. One side note: if you have a pre-existing condition they may impose a waiting period of up to 6 months before the condition will be covered. It may be that prior to applying for Medigap coverage you may have had what is called “creditable coverage” this could eliminate or shorten the waiting period for the pre-existing condition. If you talk to your Senior Insurance agent he or she will be able to determine if your previous coverage will be accepted as creditable coverage.
Once again, with the high cost of medical care these days you cannot have too much health insurance coverage. With a good Senior Insurance plan in place you will be able to help defray the medical costs that traditionally Medicare does not cover. Be sure to get your coverage during the open enrollment phase that pertains to you and get the peace of mind knowing that your will be covered in the event of a medical emergency.
